## The best free text-to-speech software of 2021

By [Daryl Baxter](https://www.techradar.com/author/daryl-baxter) May 27, 2021

These apps will convert any text to audio.

The best free text to speech software can bring a lot of great advantages to your workflow.

It comes in handy for when you want to listen to a document while multitasking, sense-check that paper or article you’ve just written, or help you retain information easier if you’re an auditory learner.

Even better, however, are its uses in the real world. The best free text to speech software can be enormously helpful for the visually impaired, or for someone who has a condition like dyslexia that makes reading on screens tricky. It can also help overcome language barriers for people who read a language but don't speak it, or are in the process of learning.

Loading the finished file into your smart device such as an [iPhone](https://www.techradar.com/deals/iphone-deals), it enables you to leave your office and listen to an updated manuscript or a report like a podcast as you finish an errand.

If you’re looking for the best free text to speech software out there to help with this, then you’re in luck. We’ve rounded up our top picks for reading either individual paragraphs or whole documents aloud.

For ripping audio from videos, do check out our guide to the best [YouTube to MP3](https://www.techradar.com/best/youtube-to-mp3-converter) converters.

* We've also featured the [best paid text to speech software](https://www.techradar.com/best/best-text-to-speech-software).

The best free text to speech software:
--------------------------------------

1. [Balabolka](https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-text-to-speech-software#1-balabolka)
2. [Natural Reader](https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-text-to-speech-software#2-natural-reader)

4. [WordTalk](https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-text-to-speech-software#4-wordtalk)
5. [Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader](https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-text-to-speech-software#5-zabaware-text-to-speech-reader)

### 1\. Balabolka

#### Powerful free text to speech software with customizable voices

There are a couple of ways to use [Balabolka](http://www.cross-plus-a.com/balabolka.htm)'s free text to speech software: you can either copy and paste text into the program, or you can open a number of supported file formats (including DOC, PDF, and HTML) in the program directly. In terms of output, you can use SAPI 4 complete with eight different voices to choose from, SAPI 5 with two, or the Microsoft Speech Platform. Whichever route you choose, you can adjust the speech, pitch and volume of playback to create a custom voice.

In addition to reading words aloud, this free text to speech software can also save narrations as audio files in a range of formats including MP3 and WAV. For lengthy documents, you can create bookmarks to make it easy to jump back to a specific location and there are excellent tools on hand to help you to customize the pronunciation of words to your liking.

With all these features to make life easier when reading text on a screen isn't an option, Balabolka is best free text to speech software around.

### 2\. Natural Reader

#### Free text to speech software with its own web browser

[Natural Reader](https://www.naturalreaders.com/online/) is a free text to speech tool that can be used in a couple of ways. The first option is to load documents into its library and have them read aloud from there. This is a neat way to manage multiple files, and the number of supported file types is impressive, including ebook formats. There's also OCR, which enables you to load up a photo or scan of text, and have it read to you.

The second option takes the form of a floating toolbar. In this mode, you can highlight text in any application and use the toolbar controls to start and customize text to speech. This means you can very easily use the feature in your web browser, word processor and a range of other programs. There's also a built-in browser to convert web content to speech more easily.

### 3\. Panopreter Basic

#### Easy text to speech conversion, with WAV and MP3 output

As the name suggests, [Panopreter Basic](http://www.panopreter.com/en/products/pb/index.php) is the best free text to speech software if you’re looking for one without frills. It accepts plain and rich text files, web pages and Microsoft Word documents as input, and exports the resulting sound in both WAV and MP3 format (the two files are saved in the same location, with the same name).

The default settings work well for quick tasks, but spend a little time exploring Panopreter Basic's Settings menu and you'll find options to change the language, destination of saved audio files, and set custom interface colors. The software can even play a piece of music once it's finished reading – a nice touch you won't find in other free text-to-speech software.

If you need something more advanced, a premium version of Panopreter is available. This edition offers several additional features including toolbars for Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer, the ability to highlight the section of text currently being read, and extra voices.

### 4\. WordTalk

#### An extension that adds text to speech to your word processor

Developed by the University of Edinburgh, [WordTalk](http://www.wordtalk.org.uk/home/) is a toolbar add-on for Word that brings customizable text to speech to Microsoft Word. It works with all editions of Word and is accessible via the toolbar or ribbon, depending on which version you're using.

The toolbar itself is certainly not the most attractive you'll ever see, appearing to have been designed by a child. Nor are all of the buttons' functions very clear, but thankfully there's a help file on hand to help.

There's no getting away from the fact that WordTalk is fairly basic, but it does support SAPI 4 and SAPI 5 voices, and these can be tweaked to your liking. The ability to just read aloud individual words, sentences or paragraphs is a particularly nice touch. You also have the option of saving narrations, and there are a number of keyboard shortcuts that allow for quick and easy access to frequently used options.

### 5\. Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader

#### A great choice for converting text from websites to speech

Despite its basic looks, [Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader](https://www.zabaware.com/reader/) has more to offer than you might first think. You can open numerous file formats directly in the program, or just copy and paste text.

Alternatively, as long as you have the program running and the relevant option enables, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader can read aloud any text you copy to the clipboard – great if you want to convert words from websites to speech – as well as dialog boxes that pop up. One of the best free text to speech software right now, this can also convert text files to WAV format.

Unfortunately the selection of voices is limited, and the only settings you can customize are volume and speed unless you burrow deep into settings to fiddle with pronunciations. Additional voices are available for a US$25 fee (about £20, AU$30), which seems rather steep, holding it back from a higher place in our list.

* Edit your speech files with the best [free audio editor](https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-audio-editor).

What is SEO copywriting? SEO copywriting is the process of creating well-optimized content that attracts users and allows search engines to represent your content on SERPs better.

And in this guide, we’ll go over the basics of SEO copywriting and tips and tricks to ensure that your writing is top-notch.

What is SEO Copywriting?
------------------------

SEO copywriting is content that is well written for both users and search engines. Three simple reasons why you need SEO copywriting for your business:

* To attract more qualified traffic at minimal cost
* To create trust by providing the content your audience is searching for
* To convince readers to take action (download your app, subscribe to your [podcast](https://www.semrush.com/blog/podcast-stats/), make a purchase, etc.) and/or convert them into customers

10 Steps to SEO Copywriting Success
-----------------------------------

Well, let’s get right into it. You want the keys to SEO copywriting success; we’ll give them to you.

A well-thought-out piece of content starts from the beginning. We’ll outline X steps to ensure that you create optimized content that is easily understood by search engines and users alike.

### 1\. Find the Right Keywords

An SEO copywriter needs to identify the keywords for the content piece that they’re writing. Some of these factors will be important when planning out the strategy for a piece of content:

* Text type (blog post, landing page, eBlast)
* The purpose of the text (informative, subscribe, transaction, etc.)
*   Audience
* Style and/or tone of voice
*   Right keywords to target

Let's talk about, arguably, one of the most critical factors on this list: keywords. Keywords are terms that people search for on the internet to find information.

Successfully [targeting the right keywords](https://www.semrush.com/blog/keyword-research-guide-for-seo/) while keeping search intent in mind will help you get there.

You shouldn't guess at the right keywords — make use of online software to assist with your keyword research.

Semrush’s [Keyword Magic Tool](https://www.semrush.com/analytics/keywordmagic/start) can help. Type in your primary search term (“seed” keyword), and the tool will show you semantically related keywords. [Play with filters](https://www.semrush.com/blog/keyword-research-with-semrush-keyword-magic/) and group the keywords by search volume, keyword difficulty, or other metrics.

There are a variety of factors that go into choosing which keywords are the right keywords to target. Some businesses or writers may need to focus on high-volume, competitive keywords. However, most writers and businesses should look for mid-to-high volume keywords with low difficulty for targeting, i.e., relatively easy to target, yet have solid search volumes.

### 2\. Find Questions That People Ask

Search engines are now, essentially, answer engines. Resources like People Also Ask on Google, [AlsoAsked.com](https://alsoasked.com/), and forums like [Quora](https://www.quora.com/) or [Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/) can be great starting points for uncovering what questions arise around your topic.

You can also use Semrush’s [Topic Research Tool](https://www.semrush.com/features/topic-research/), which provides headlines, related questions, and more based on the keywords you enter.

Once you have [identified which questions](https://www.semrush.com/blog/semrush-topic-research/) pop up most frequently, you can develop a superior answer to what other SERP competitors are writing. See what they’re doing, make improvements, and be sure to answer the question thoroughly.

Do you need to add every question? No! Just the ones that are relevant to your business.

For example, if you own a car dealership that only sells cars and doesn’t service them, you likely wouldn’t create dedicated content to answering servicing questions since it’s a service your business doesn’t provide.

### 3\. Identify and Map Search Intent

Each webpage and the content that is placed on it should be focused on user intent. Your content will vary depending on different stages of the customer journey. With that in mind, your keywords should also vary based on the different intents.

By identifying the reason behind a user typing in your target keyword in search engines, you will uncover the “keyword intent.”

There are four types of intent searches:

* **Informational intent**: Users want to find more information on a specific topic, product, or industry. Example: “best coffee machines”
* **Navigational intent**: Users intend to visit a specific site or page. Example: “Nespresso coffee machine types”
* **Commercial intent**: Users consider a purchase and want to investigate their options. Example: “coffee machines comparison”
* **Transactional intent**: Users aim to purchase a product/service. Example: “buy a new Nespresso coffee machine”

Your copy should target keywords that closely match the search intent of the user.

### 4\. Check Competitors' Articles for Your Target Keywords

Enter your primary keyword in Google’s search bar (or using Semrush’s Keyword Overview Tool or SEO Content Template) and look at the top 10 search results to determine what these pages have in common. This is what a good writer should do in the first place to collect optimization and copywriting ideas from your main competitors.

Semrush makes it easy to quickly get SEO recommendations for your future content using the [SEO Content Template](http://www.semrush.com/seo-content-template/). You will see how your top-10 competitors use your target keywords in the article, which semantically related words they are likely to include, the sites that link to them, their readability score, and their text length.

You can export all this data to help you prepare your content outline to ensure you hit target keywords and monitor what domains may be relevant to start planning your backlink outreach.

### 5\. Gather Original Data

An efficient tactic to engage readers is to share unique and original data. This can help you generate [backlinks](https://www.semrush.com/blog/what-are-backlinks/) to your page, which will positively affect your rankings.

An external writer definitely won't have all the insights into your company (although they can ask the right questions before starting work). An internal writer may not have enough information, either. So, gathering data is essential. But what if you don’t have enough data to share?

* You can set up surveys and ask customers about their preferences, lifestyle, etc. And then share the results of your poll. Chances are, bloggers and news sites writing on your industry can refer to your survey results or just share them across social media.
* Look through your sales data to uncover patterns. This is especially interesting to look at during times of crisis when many industries are under severe stress (negative or positive). Industry writers will appreciate some inside data to look at.
* You can also use customer-generated content. Ask your customers to share success stories with some stats on how your product or service has helped them increase their sales. Examples: “Save up to 80% more time on keyword research.”

Accurate data, original visuals, and catchy sentences encourage readers to share your message with their followers on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. Brainstorm and come up with data sources your company has on hand, and start collecting data for content.

Want to learn how to put a video in your Google Slides presentation?

At [VEED](https://veed-grow-3.herokuapp.com/grow/how-to-put-edit-and-loop-a-video-in-google-slides/veed.io), an easy-to-use, yet powerful, video editor, we know the power of embedding a good video in your Google Slides presentation. According to recent research, only a shocking 4% of professionals put videos in their presentations.

This means that 96% are missing out on an effective medium to catch people’s attention and create a powerful presentation.

Want to stand out? Here’s the perfect tutorial for you!

You’ll learn:

* How to put a video in Google Slides in a super quick and easy way.
* How do you let someone access a video on Google Slides?
* How to edit a video embedded In Google Slides
* Google Slides video loop - a quick way to loop your videos for Google Slides

Let’s go!

How To Embed A Video In Google Slides In A Super Quick And Easy Way
-------------------------------------------------------------------

### 1\. Go to your Google Slides presentation

### 2\. Go to the slide to embed your video in

### 3\. In the top menu bar, go to **Insert > Video**

### 4a. Enter the link from YouTube and select the video

### 4b. Or use a video from Google Drive

Alternatively, you can also embed a video in Google Slides from your Google Drive folders.

**Warning**: Make sure that all of your editors can access this video from Google Drive. Otherwise, only the original creator will be able to play the video in the presentation (and not the editors).

5. Present your Google Slides with the video!

And voilà, there you have it. You’ve just embedded a video in your Google Slides presentation!

How Do You Let Someone Access A Video On Google Slides?
-------------------------------------------------------

People who are allowed to edit your Google Slides presentation might not have access to the embedded video from your Google Drive.

**Note**: If this is the case, they won’t be able to play it during the presentation.

This is because your video has restricted access (ie only you can access it).

To make the embedded Google Drive video accessible to your editors, do the following steps:

* Go to your [Google Drive](https://drive.google.com/)
* Right click on the video added in Google Slides
*   Click **Share.**

You can either share the embedded video:

* To anyone with the link

* With only the editors involved (enter their emails).

Then, your editors will be able to play the video while presenting the whole thing!

How To Edit A Video Embedded In Google Slides
---------------------------------------------

You’ve just learned how to put a video in your Google Slides presentation. But now, it’s time to learn how to edit it for a quick formatting fix or two.

**Note**: Google Slides has very, _very_, **very** basic video editing capabilities (because it’s meant for presentations).

Use [VEED’s easy-to-use, yet super powerful, video editor](http://veed.io/) if you want to trim your video, add text, automatically add subtitles and other cool features.

### 1\. In the top menu bar go to **Format> Format Options**

2. Video playback options

Here are the rudimentary video playback options with Google Slides. They’re quite easy to understand:

* **Start at**...**End at**: These denote at which points the embedded video starts to play and ends.

Here’s an example: Let’s say that you have a four-minute video but you only want it to play between 00:10 to 00:40.

Enter these values, so when you play this video embedded in your Google Slides presentation, it will start at 00:10 and stop playing at 00:40.

* **Auto-play when presenting**. With this is ticked, your video will automatically start when you get to this slide in your Google Slides presentation.
* **Mute audio**: Ticking this will mute your audio while the video’s playing.

### 3\. Size and rotation options

You can either drag the ends of your video (upon clicking on it) to change its size and position.

Tick the **Lock aspect ratio** box, so that you can change the size of your video without changing the overall shape.

### 4\. Position options

First off, you can drag the video you’ve embedded in Google Slides to change its location.

But if you want to change the coordinates numerically, you can alter the **X and Y** values to place your video anywhere in the Slide.

Don’t know what the **From Center/Top left is all about?** They’re basically base point references:

* **From Center.** If you put X:0 and Y:0, this puts your video in the center of the slide.

* **From Top left.** If you put X:0 and Y:0, this puts your embedded video in the top-left corner of the slide.

### 5\. How to loop the basic way

If you want to loop the video, simply right click on the embedded video and select **Loop.**

**Here’s a big BUT:** When your video ends, it doesn’t actually _automatically_ loop, and you’ll have to do that yourself by clicking on the video. It’s not really useful for anyone.

Google Slides Loop Video - The Best and Easiest Way

------------------------------------------------------
Now, here is the right way to loop your Google Slides video with VEED’s easy-to-use free video editor.

### 1) Go to VEED and [upload the Google Slides video you want to loop](https://www.veed.io/tools/video-looper)

**Note:** If you want to save your project and start new ones, [you can sign up for free](http://veed.io/).

You can upload from:

*   Your local files
* YouTube video (just enter the link)
*   Your webcam
*   Dropbox

### 2\. Click on **Add Video** button and upload the video to loop again

The **Add video** button is located above the timeline, to the left. Upload the video the same number of times that you want the clip to loop. Place it next to the other video to merge both clips seamlessly.

### 3a is for those who want to save the video they want to loop as an MP4 video file.

### 3b. Leave the video file as it is

Alternatively, **you can also just save the video as a GIF**. In this case, you won’t need to upload the same video clip over and over again because GIFs loop on their own.

### 4\. Download the video you’ve just looped and put the video in Google Slides!

Hit **Export,** wait for the video to render, and download it as an MP4 video or as a GIF. And you’re done! Just go to Google Slides and put the looped video in.

Create And Edit Beautiful Video Presentations Using VEED!

Text-to-speech (TTS) is a type of assistive technology that reads digital text aloud. It’s sometimes called “read aloud” technology. TTS can take words on a computer or other digital device and convert them into audio. TTS is very helpful for kids who struggle with reading, but it can also help kids with writing and editing, and even focusing.

How text-to-speech works
------------------------

TTS works with nearly every personal digital device, including computers, smartphones and tablets. All kinds of text files can be read aloud, including Word and Pages documents. Even online web pages can be read aloud.

The voice in TTS is computer-generated, and reading speed can usually be sped up or slowed down. Voice quality varies, but some voices sound human. There are even computer-generated voices that sound like children speaking.

Many TTS tools highlight words as they are read aloud. This allows kids to see text and hear it at the same time.

Some TTS tools also have a technology called optical character recognition (OCR). OCR allows TTS tools to read text aloud from images. For example, your child could take a photo of a street sign and have the words on the sign turned into audio.

How text-to-speech can help your child
--------------------------------------

Print materials in the classroom — like books and handouts — can create obstacles for kids with reading issues. That’s because some kids struggle with decoding and understanding printed words on the page. Using digital text with TTS helps remove these barriers.

### Did you know that your child may be eligible for free digital text-to-speech books? [Learn more.](https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/assistive-technology/finding-an-assistive-technology/where-to-find-free-audiobooks-and-digital-text-to-speech-books-for-your-child)

And since TTS lets kids both see and hear text when reading, it creates a multisensory reading experience. Researchers have found that the combination of seeing and hearing text when reading:

*   Improves word recognition
* Increases the ability to pay attention and remember information while reading
* Allows kids to focus on comprehension instead of sounding out words
* Increases kids’ staying power for reading assignments
* Helps kids recognize and fix errors in their own writing

Like audiobooks, TTS won’t slow down the development of your child’s reading skills.

### Kids learn in different ways and at different paces.

It’s important to teach to each student’s individual strengths, skills and needs. This is true for all kids — not just kids with learning and attention issues.

Depending on the device your child uses, there are many different TTS tools:

* **Built-in text-to-speech:** Many devices have [built-in TTS tools](http://www.readingrockets.org/article/assistive-technology-s-built-mobile-devices). This includes desktop and laptop computers, smartphones and digital tablets and Chrome. Your child can use this TTS without purchasing special apps or software.
* **Web-based tools:** Some websites have TTS tools on-site. For instance, you can turn on our website’s “Reading Assist” tool, located in the lower left corner of your screen, to have this webpage read aloud. Also, kids with [dyslexia may qualify for a free Bookshare account](https://www.bookshare.org/signUpMember?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=learnmore&utm_campaign=understood) with digital books that can be read with TTS. There are also [free TTS tools available online](https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/assistive-technology/finding-an-assistive-technology/free-assistive-technology-tools-on-the-web).
* **Text-to-speech apps:** Kids can also download TTS apps on smartphones and digital tablets. These apps often have special features like text highlighting in different colors and OCR. Some examples include Voice Dream Reader, Claro ScanPen and Office Lens.
* **Chrome tools:** Chrome is a relatively new platform with several TTS tools. These include Read&Write for Google Chrome and Snap&Read Universal. You can use these tools on a Chromebook or any computer with the Chrome browser. See more [Chrome tools to help with reading](https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/assistive-technology/finding-an-assistive-technology/6-chrome-tools-for-kids-with-reading-issues).
* **Text-to-speech software programs:** There are also several literacy software programs for desktop and laptop computers. In addition to other reading and writing tools, many of these programs have TTS. Examples include Kurzweil 3000, ClaroRead and Read&Write. Microsoft’s Immersive Reader tool also has TTS. It can be found in programs like OneNote and Word. See more examples of [software for kids with reading issues](https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/assistive-technology/finding-an-assistive-technology/software-programs-for-kids-with-reading-issues).

How your child can access text-to-speech at school
--------------------------------------------------

It’s a good idea to start the conversation with your child’s teacher if you think your child would benefit from TTS. If your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 plan, your child has a right to the assistive technology she needs to learn. But even without an IEP or a 504 plan, a school may be willing to provide TTS if it can help your child.

You can also use TTS at home. Try one of the tools above, or check out [options for free audiobooks and digital TTS books](https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/assistive-technology/finding-an-assistive-technology/where-to-find-free-audiobooks-and-digital-text-to-speech-books-for-your-child). And learn more about [assistive technology for reading](http://www.readingrockets.org/article/assistive-technology-reading).

Key takeaways
-------------

* Text-to-speech (TTS) can provide a multisensory reading experience that combines seeing with hearing.
* Using TTS won’t delay the development of your child’s reading skills.
* Your child’s school can provide TTS, but you can also try it at home.
