DeepMind, the AI unit of Google that invented the chess champ neural network AlphaZero a few years back, shocked the world again in November with a program that had solved a decades-old problem of how proteins fold. The program handily beat all competitors, in what one researcher called a "watershed moment" that promises to revolutionize biology.

AlphaFold 2, as it's called, was described at the time only in brief terms, in a blog post by DeepMind and in a paper abstract provided by DeepMind for the competition in which they submitted the program, the Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction biannual competition.

Last week, DeepMind finally revealed just how it's done, offering up not only a blog post but also a 16-page summary paper written by DeepMind's John Jumper and colleagues in Nature magazine, a 62-page collection of supplementary material, and a code library on GitHub. A story on the new details by Nature's Ewan Calloway characterizes the data dump as "protein structure coming to the masses."

So, what have we learned? A few things. As the name suggests, this neural net is the successor to the first AlphaFold, which had also trounced competitors in the prior competition in 2018. The most immediate revelation of AlphaFold 2 is that making progress in artificial intelligence can require what's called an architecture change.

The architecture of a software program is the particular set of operations used and the way they are combined. The first AlphaFold was made up of a convolutional neural network, or "CNN," a classic neural network that has been the workhorse of many AI breakthroughs in the past decade, such as containing triumphs in the ImageNet computer vision contest.

But convolutions are out, and graphs are in. Or, more specifically, the combination of graph networks with what's called attention.

A graph network is when some collection of things can be assessed in terms of their relatedness and how they're related via friendships -- such as people in a social network. In this case, AlphaFold uses information about proteins to construct a graph of how near to one another different amino acids are.

Also: Google DeepMind's effort on COVID-19 coronavirus rests on the shoulders of giants

These graphs are manipulated by the attention mechanism that has been gaining in popularity in many quarters of AI. Broadly speaking, attention is the practice of adding extra computing power to some pieces of input data. Programs that exploit attention have lead to breakthroughs in a variety of areas, but especially natural language processing, as in the case of Google's Transformer.

The part that used convolutions in the first AlphaFold has been dropped in Alpha Fold 2, replaced by a whole slew of attention mechanisms.

Use of attention runs throughout AlphaFold 2. The first part of AlphaFold is what's called EvoFormer, and it uses attention to focus processing on computing the graph of how each amino acid relates to another amino acid. Because of the geometric forms created in the graph, Jumper and colleagues refer to this operation of estimating the graph as "triangle self-attention."

DeepMind / Nature

Echoing natural language programs, the EvoFormer allows the triangle attention to send information backward to the groups of amino acid sequences, known as "multi-sequence alignments," or "MSAs," a common term in bioinformatics in which related amino acid sequences are compared piece by piece.

The authors consider the MSAs and the graphs to be in a kind of conversation thanks to attention -- what they refer to as a "joint embedding." Hence, attention is leading to communication between parts of the program.

DeepMind / Nature

The second part of AlphaFold 2, following the EvoFormer, is what's called a Structure Module, which is supposed to take the graphs that the EvoFormer has built and turn them into specifications of the 3-D structure of the protein, the output that wins the CASP competition.

Here, the authors have introduced an attention mechanism that calculates parts of a protein in isolation, called an "invariant point attention" mechanism. They describe it as "a geometry-aware attention operation."

The Structure Module initiates particles at a kind of origin point in space, which you can think of as a 3-D reference field, called a "residue gas," and then proceeds to rotate and shift the particles to produce the final 3-D configuration. Again, the important thing is that the particles are transformed independently of one another, using the attention mechanism.

DeepMind / Nature

Why is it important that graphs, and attention, have replaced convolutions? In the original abstract offered for the research last year, Jumper and colleagues pointed out a need to move beyond a fixation on what are called "local" structures.

Going back to AlphaFold 1, the convolutional neural network functioned by measuring the distance between amino acids, and then summarizing those measurements for all pairs of amino acids as a 2-D picture, known as a distance histogram, or "distogram." The CNN then operated by poring over that picture, the way CNNs do, to find local motifs that build into broader and broader motifs spanning the range of distances.

But that orderly progression from local motifs can ignore long-range dependencies, which are one of the important elements that attention supposedly captures. For example, the attention mechanism in the EvoFormer can connect what is learned in the triangle attention mechanism to what is learned in the search of the MSA -- not just one section of the MSA, but the entire universe of related amino acid sequences.

Hence, attention allows for making leaps that are more "global" in nature.

Another thing we see in AlphaFold is the end-to-end goal. In the original AlphaFold, the final assembly of the physical structure was simply driven by the convolutions, and what they came up with.

In AlphaFold 2, Jumper and colleagues have emphasized training the neural network from "end to end." As they say:

"Both within the Structure Module and throughout the whole network, we reinforce the notion of iterative refinement by repeatedly applying the final loss to outputs then feeding the outputs recursively to the same modules. The iterative refinement using the whole network (that we term 'recycling' and is related to approaches in computer vision) contributes significantly to accuracy with minor extra training time."

Hence, another big takeaway from AlphaFold 2 is the notion that a neural network really needs to be constantly revamping its predictions. That is true both for the recycling operation, but also in other respects. For example, the EvoFormer, the thing that makes the graphs of amino acids, revises those graphs at each of the multiple stages, what are called "blocks," of the EvoFormer. Jumper and team refer to this constant updates as "constant communication" throughout the network.

As the authors note, through constant revision, the Structure piece of the program seems to "smoothly" refine its models of the proteins. "AlphaFold makes constant incremental improvements to the structure until it can no longer improve," they write. Sometimes, that process is "greedy," meaning, the Structure Module hits on a good solution early in its layers of processing; sometimes, it takes longer.

Also: AI in sixty seconds

In any event, in this case the benefits of training a neural network -- or a combination of networks -- seem certain to be a point of emphasis for many researchers.

Alongside that big lesson, there is an important mystery that remains at the center of AlphaFold 2: Why?

Why is it that proteins fold in the ways they do? AlphaFold 2 has unlocked the prospect of every protein in the universe having its structure revealed, which is, again, an achievement decades in the making. But AlphaFold 2 doesn't explain why proteins assume the shape that they do.

Proteins are amino acids, and the forces that make them curl up into a given shape are fairly straightforward -- things like certain amino acids being attracted or repelled by positive or negative charges, and some amino acids being "hydrophobic," meaning, they stay farther away from water molecules.

What is still lacking is an explanation of why it should be that certain amino acids take on shapes that are so hard to predict.

AlphaFold 2 is a stunning achievement in terms of building a machine to transform sequence data into protein models, but we may have to wait for further study of the program itself to know what it is telling us about the big picture of protein behavior.

Google CEO

DeepMind this week open-sourced AlphaFold 2, its AI system that predicts the shape of proteins, to accompany the publication of a paper in the journal Nature. With the codebase now available, DeepMind says it hopes to broaden access for researchers and organizations in the health care and life science fields.

The recipe for proteins — large molecules consisting of amino acids that are the fundamental building blocks of tissues, muscles, hair, enzymes, antibodies, and other essential parts of living organisms — are encoded in DNA. It’s these genetic definitions that circumscribe their three-dimensional structures, which in turn determine their capabilities. But protein “folding,” as it’s called, is notoriously difficult to figure out from a corresponding genetic sequence alone. DNA contains only information about chains of amino acid residues and not those chains’ final form.

In December 2018, DeepMind attempted to tackle the challenge of protein folding with AlphaFold, the product of two years of work. The Alphabet subsidiary said at the time that AlphaFold could predict structures more precisely than prior solutions. Its successor, AlphaFold 2, announced in December 2020, improved on this to outgun competing protein-folding-predicting methods for a second time. In the results from the 14th Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction (CASP) assessment, AlphaFold 2 had average errors comparable to the width of an atom (or 0.1 of a nanometer), competitive with the results from experimental methods.

AlphaFold draws inspiration from the fields of biology, physics, and machine learning. It takes advantage of the fact that a folded protein can be thought of as a “spatial graph,” where amino acid residues (amino acids contained within a peptide or protein) are nodes and edges connect the residues in close proximity. AlphaFold leverages an AI algorithm that attempts to interpret the structure of this graph while reasoning over the implicit graph it’s building using evolutionarily related sequences, multiple sequence alignment, and a representation of amino acid residue pairs.

In the open source release, DeepMind says it significantly streamlined AlphaFold 2. Whereas the system took days of computing time to generate structures for some entries to CASP, the open source version is about 16 times faster. It can generate structures in minutes to hours, depending on the size of the protein.

Real-world applications

DeepMind makes the case that AlphaFold, if further refined, could be applied to previously intractable problems in the field of protein folding, including those related to epidemiological efforts. Last year, the company predicted several protein structures of SARS-CoV-2, including ORF3a, whose makeup was formerly a mystery. At CASP14, DeepMind predicted the structure of another coronavirus protein, ORF8, that has since been confirmed by experimentalists.

Beyond aiding the pandemic response, DeepMind expects AlphaFold will be used to explore the hundreds of millions of proteins for which science currently lacks models. Since DNA specifies the amino acid sequences that comprise protein structures, advances in genomics have made it possible to read protein sequences from the natural world, with 180 million protein sequences and counting in the publicly available Universal Protein database. In contrast, given the experimental work needed to translate from sequence to structure, only around 170,000 protein structures are in the Protein Data Bank.

DeepMind says it’s committed to making AlphaFold available “at scale” and collaborating with partners to explore new frontiers, like how multiple proteins form complexes and interact with DNA, RNA, and small molecules. Earlier this year, the company announced a new partnership with the Geneva-based Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, a nonprofit pharmaceutical organization that used AlphaFold to identify fexinidazole as a replacement for the toxic compound melarsoprol in the treatment of sleeping sickness.

 ## Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

 ![img](https://www.nature.com/static/images/favicons/nature/apple-touch-icon.f39cb19454.png)]

Proteins are essential to life, and understanding their structure can facilitate a mechanistic understanding of their function. Through an enormous experimental effort1–4, the structures of around 100,000 unique proteins have been determined5, but this represents a small fraction of the billions of known protein sequences6,7. Structural coverage is bottlenecked by the months to years of painstaking effort required to determine a single protein structure. Accurate computational approaches are needed to address this gap and to enable large-scale structural bioinformatics. Predicting the 3-D structure that a protein will adopt based solely on its amino acid sequence, the structure prediction component of the ‘protein folding problem’8, has been an important open research problem for more than 50 years9. Despite recent progress10–14, existing methods fall far short of atomic accuracy, especially when no homologous structure is available. Here we provide the first computational method that can regularly predict protein structures with atomic accuracy even where no similar structure is known. We validated an entirely redesigned version of our neural network-based model, AlphaFold, in the challenging 14th Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction (CASP14)15, demonstrating accuracy competitive with experiment in a majority of cases and greatly outperforming other methods. Underpinning the latest version of AlphaFold is a novel machine learning approach that incorporates physical and biological knowledge about protein structure, leveraging multi-sequence alignments, into the design of the deep learning algorithm.

DeepMind, a Google-owned artificial intelligence (AI) company based in the United Kingdom, made scientific history when it announced last November that it had a solution to a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology—protein folding. This AI machine learning breakthrough may help accelerate the discovery of new medications and novel treatments for diseases. On July 15, 2021 DeepMind revealed details on how its AI works in a new peer-reviewed paper published in Nature, and made its revolutionary AlphaFold version 2.0 model available as open-source on GitHub.

The three-dimensional (3D) shape and function of proteins are determined by the sequence of its amino acids. AlphaFold predicts three-dimensional (3D) models of protein structures. Open-source software makes code open and available to download, which over time may also help to improve the software as well.

“Predicting the 3-D structure that a protein will adopt based solely on its amino acid sequence, the structure prediction component of the ‘protein folding problem’, has been an important open research problem for more than 50 years,” wrote Demis Hassabis, John Jumper, Richard Evans, and their DeepMind research colleagues who authored the new paper.

According to the DeepMind researchers, the structures of roughly 100,000 unique proteins have already been determined by scientists, however this “represents a small fraction of the billions of known protein sequences.” There are approximately 200 million known proteins in existence, and roughly 30 million new ones are discovered annually.

“Structural coverage is bottlenecked by the months to years of painstaking effort required to determine a single protein structure,” wrote the researchers. “Accurate computational approaches are needed to address this gap and to enable large-scale structural bioinformatics.”

In molecular biology, proteins are large, chemically complex large biomolecules molecules called macromolecules that consist of hundreds or even thousands of amino acids connected in long chains linked through covalent peptide bonds. Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, are organic molecules that combine to form proteins. There are around 20 types of amino acids in proteins, and each has different chemical traits.

“Here we provide the first computational method that can regularly predict protein structures with atomic accuracy even where no similar structure is known,” reported the DeepMind researchers. “We validated an entirely redesigned version of our neural network-based model, AlphaFold, in the challenging 14th Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction (CASP14), demonstrating accuracy competitive with experiment in a majority of cases and greatly outperforming other methods.”

AlphaFold uses input features extracted from templates, amino-acid sequence, and multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) for inference and produces features outputs that include per-residue confidence scores, atom coordinates, and the distogram, which is a histogram of distances between pairs of pixels in an image. A histogram is a graphical display of numerical data that represents a frequency distribution with rectangles or bars where the widths represent class intervals and the areas are proportional to the corresponding frequencies. TensorFlow was used to develop the artificial neural networks and Python was used for the data analysis. Markov Chain Monte Carlo based Bayesian analysis was also used.

Proteins are essential to life, and understanding their structure can facilitate a mechanistic understanding of their function,” the researchers wrote.

DeepMind’s groundbreaking work and the open-sourcing of AlphaFold version 2.0 may help accelerate innovation through scientific collaboration in life sciences, biotechnology, data science, molecular biology, pharmaceutical, and more industries to discover novel treatments and medications to extend human longevity in the future.

For digital marketers, the coming of a new year comes with a chance to improve and strengthen their marketing strategies. This could mean staying up to date with the trends that could shape the world of digital marketing for small businesses.

With the chaos of 2020 now behind us, it’s time to look ahead to what we can expect in 2021. Let’s look at seven of the content marketing trends to adopt this year:

1. Value-driven content will matter more

At this time and age, web users see a lot of content on the internet. With the sheer volume of blogs and content uploaded each day, you can expect people to become picky when it comes to what content they want to consume. At best, they pick an article containing information they haven’t read anywhere else on the internet.

Remember that you’re not the only one offering your products in the market. You have to make sure that you stand out among your competitors. If you’re giving away eBooks or guides that contain generic information, they’re less likely to give out their contact information to get access to your offers.

The best chance you have at gaining your customers’ trust is to offer content that drives value. Start by thinking of how your product will affect their lives in the long run. If you focus too much on directly promoting the product itself, chances are, your audience will skip it and look for information they need elsewhere.

For instance, if you’re selling a fruit juicer, instead of just producing content about what it is and how it’s used, you can talk about the health benefits of consuming fruit juices. You can also talk about how using the fruit juice will help them save time, effort, etc.

Use concrete examples, and if possible, use your customers’ testimonies. Reading other people’s experiences with a product or service will affect how consumers view your product, thus, helping you convert them into customers.

2. Video content will continue to dominate in the digital marketing arena

Videos are one of the most effective mediums to deliver your brand’s message out there. People are highly visual, and many consumers are more likely to prefer consuming information in the form of a 2-3 minute video than scroll through blogs.

When HubSpot conducted a survey on video marketing in 2017, they found out that 54 percent of their 3,010 consumers from the US, Germany, Colombia, and Mexico would like to see videos from brands. These video marketing statistics from DepositPhotos in 2017 are also worth considering:

90 percent of consumers say that watching a video helps them make buying decisions.

Adding videos to your website’s landing pages can lead to 80% more conversions.

The mere mention of videos on your email marketing subject line can lead to a 19% increase in open rates.

If anything, it tells us that if your brand isn’t utilizing video marketing, you might as well start doing it now. Videos are easy to consume, and it keeps your audience engaged.

Moreover, with events and face-to-face interaction still limited in 2021, live video events, like webinars, will become one way businesses can generate leads, work with influencers to promote their brand, and ultimately raise their profits.

3. Consumers will prefer hyper-personalized content

Personalization has long been a digital marketing trend, and it will continue to be one in 2021. But as customers become savvier, merely using your customers’ first names may not be enough to improve their experience. If you want to drive more traffic and increase conversions, and therefore, sales, you have to know what your customers want.

This is where the concept of hyper-personalization comes into play. Hyper-personalization is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to collect data from your web visitors — their activity on your website, products they frequently view, and more. The more data you have, the better personalized content you’ll be able to deliver to your audience.

You can collect these data using third-party software like Google Analytics, HubSpot’s Marketing Hub, and more. With the data, you can create personalized emails, pop-ups, and other content tailored to your audience preferences. For instance, if one of your web visitors abandoned their cart after shopping, you can send them a follow-up email after a few hours to remind them to complete the purchase process.

4. Topical authority will start to matter more

Search engine algorithms will be placing more emphasis on expertise and authority when it comes to ranking websites on the search engine results page (SERPs). Topical authority talks about the website’s depth of knowledge when it comes to a specific subject matter. It’s typically achieved by writing longer and high-quality content.

The reason behind this is that when you have long-form content, you’ll be able to discuss a topic in more depth. In other words, you’ll be supplying more information to your consumers, which will eventually help you gain their trust. If other websites find your content valuable, they may use it as a reference, and in turn, you’ll gain backlinks — another important SEO ranking factor.

5. Voice searches will impact how content marketing will sound like

The advent of Siri, Alexa, and Cortana brought people’s strategy to the next level. Now, screenless searching is something that millions of people in the U.S. do every single day. By simply asking the AI-powered voice assistant, they can have the answers spoken back to them without even looking at or touching the device.

If you want to up your content marketing strategy in 2021, optimizing your content for voice searches won’t just be an option but a necessity.

The easiest way to optimize your content is to write your product description so that it answers questions in a straightforward manner. This obviously causes a shift in how content marketing will sound like how we write isn’t exactly the same as how we speak. With voice search optimization, you’ll have to ensure that your content will adapt to the natural language.

When writing, try to use complete sentences with long-tail keywords within your content. You can also take advantage of “near me” searches to appeal to more targeted and local searches.

6. AI-Powered content will start to dominate

The beauty of artificial intelligence is that it can take a lot of things off people’s plates. In content marketing, AI proves this statement to be true. It helps collect customer information for personalization, but it can also make use of those data to generate targeted content that they can send to consumers. From captions to summaries, AI-powered tools can help you develop that.

One tool, in particular, the GPT-3 by the OpenAI Company, has been known to generate decent-quality content. It sources information and references all over the internet, which it then uses to create content. AI-driven content will help build your website’s authority over time.

Chatbots are also AI-powered, and they are getting smarter every single day. Now, stores can use their chatbots to assist their customers in order placement, check out, and tracking. Businesses can also use chatbots to deliver information quickly, thus adding more support to your business’s content marketing strategy.

7. Content atomization will be a thing

With movements still limited for people because of COVID-19, getting content out there will be slightly different in 2021. Marketers would have to make use of what they currently have to expand their reach. This is then where content atomization comes into play.

Content atomization is breaking down long-form content into five or more content pieces. Each of the articles will be discussed in more detail and maybe presented from a new angle.

For instance, if you created an eBook guide on your fruit juicer, you can pick some of the subheadings individually and build content around that. You can publish it as a blog or newsletter. You can also turn your eBook into shorter, more digestible content like an infographic.

Constant content production will be vital as businesses move forward. Content atomization allows them to maximize what they already have and turn it into something more engaging and fun for the audience. It also benefits them in a way that they won’t have to spend more on content creation since they will only be repurposing old content.

Final thoughts

You may have heard of the adage “content is king” a hundred times before, but in 2021, it will remain very much true. As people continue to look at new ways to access and consume information, marketers will have to adapt to these content marketing trends to make sure that they deliver the content their audience needs at the right time.

Digital marketing for small businesses has come a long way since. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that for businesses to survive; they have to be ready to adapt to changes. Content provides a way for marketers to reach their audience. If done right, your strategies might just help convince consumers and persuade them to convert into paying customers.

 ## Top 6 Trends Of Digital Marketing By Sanjay Kumar Gupta This 2021 Business Year

 ![img](https://www.outlookindia.com/public/upload_share/website/spot_388641.jpg)]

In the growing competition of digital trends, it has become important to deliver absolute effort when promoting individuals or brands. 2021 has brought back the new flavour of branding online rather than promoting it offline. Sanjay Kumar Gupta understood the importance of digital marketing way before time. He started his first venture at the age of 18 and found major success through his creative ideas and entrepreneurship. His website ‘Finance Rewind’ became the hub for all digital solutions making the website the most viewed. Since he was born in a middle-class family in Delhi, he has always worked hard to achieve the best in his life. His work was soon recognized by many, and he has millions of followers online.

Here are a few digital marketing trends this 2021 business year that shall change the game forever-

Influencers trending

Influencer marketing in the digital platform has proved to be the new age solution for getting more reach. From being trusted more to being generating more actual sales turnover, influencers can make the difference. As influencers are the most-watched over the internet and are loyal badge holders, the customers happen to believe in the product or services more than usual. This builds trust in a brand helping in reaching millions and turning the actual sales game.

Videos for the brain

Be it schools or corporate; people have seen a major shift of interest from working on PPTs or papers to video representation. The idea is simple here, the more the human brain finds interest in something, the likely they shall remember it. Videos are fun ways to remember ideas, projects, numbers or stories, and that is the reason when people watch a video, they remember it for ages as it leaves an impact on their brain. Digital marketing is now more on videos, and after the lockdown and the shutting up of countries, people love the alternatives to be at home and find their entertainment at ease.

AI is the new human

Artificial Intelligence for the win as multiple companies uses it to make it easier for them to find patterns and prepare a client-based marketing strategy for greater success. AI makes it easier for companies to track their actual data. Since AI is way cheaper and better at its performance, it has become the new human brain to do doing business.

Social Media enlightening branding

For a decade, social media has turned all heads towards its usage and popularity. Be at 18 or 60; every age group is now on another social media platform. Big brands or individual is on social media to enhance the chances of being the chosen one by the viewers. Customers now go online platforms to buy products or services, and platforms like things have enlightened many possibilities in branding as millions are now watching.

Make it customized

Humans interact with each other through customized words and appropriate construction of thoughts to deliver the message amongst each other to ensure appropriate communication. This process of customizing thoughts and services is known as personalization. Just like humans, brands and the individual business unit can be only relatable when they personalize their interaction with their customers. The practice of personalization is the reason customers connect better with the brand and hence end up availing of services or products.

Mr. Sanjay Kumar Gupta believes that “Inspiration is the most important part of our digital strategy. It’s much easier to double your business by doubling your conversion rate than by doubling your traffic. Think about what the user is going to type and hence act accordingly. People are crazy about being understood and served accordingly, and that is what our company has been following for years.”

He added, “Digital Marketing is the new tool that can make or break the deal. The power of digital presence and the need to consider digital interaction should be put to play. I have always believed that even if you are in business, you need to consider the need of your consumer and that can be only done by putting your foot in their shoes and understanding their need.”

 ## Fashion video marketing: all the uses of an irreplaceable tool

 ![img](https://www.doxee.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/fashion-video-marketing.jpg)]

Video marketing in the fashion industry is effective, which is likely to become increasingly important in the coming months and, in general, in a post-pandemic world.

After all, fashion, like many other sectors, has had to adapt and will increasingly have to adapt to the changes imposed by this health emergency.

In fact, if we look closely, fashion is one of the areas that will have to be radically rethought: no longer able to exploit events as the central moment for proposing a new collection, companies will be forced to find alternative ways. Some of them will be decidedly disruptive.

The year of the fashion revolution

Although 2020 was a difficult year in general, it has nevertheless stimulated a reflection by many fashion brands on the timing and mode of operation of their business.

It is in this context that Giorgio Armani has given voice to this phase of transformation, writing that the crisis is instead a wonderful opportunity to slow everything down, to realign everything, to draw a more authentic and true horizon (ilfattoquotidiano.it).

Rethinking production and distribution times, therefore.

Echoing the great Italian designer were other important names in the sector, such as Alessandro Michele, the creative director of Gucci, who declared that they would reduce the number of annual fashion shows down to two (tgcom24.mediaset.it).

Many other fashion houses have followed suit, choosing to suspend their events in order to rethink a new and alternative way of doing fashion.

What started from the need for security and safety has completely revolutionized the industry as we all know it, bringing even an event as iconic as the fashion show into question.

Can fashion exist without fashion shows?

Before COVID-19, it would be difficult to imagine that the fashion industry could exist without fashion shows. However, faced with the emergency, we realized that this alternative is not only feasible, but sometimes even necessary.

For this reason, over the past few months, companies have experimented with different solutions in order to try to convey the same experience.

One of these solutions has been to organize digital fashion shows. In the first Digital Fashion Week in history, all the major fashion brands showed their collections through images, videos, or streaming events. Despite the good intentions and the positive response to it, detractors have mercilessly criticized the initiative, branding it as Netflix Style.

According to many critics, the videos were “naïve” and, except for a few cases, they were all too similar.

The point, of course, does not concern the collections presented, but the way in which they were presented. For us, the way that the video was used is of most interest. In fact, it’s necessary to reflect on the effectiveness of these tools when we talk about conveying fashion industry content, which by definition should be impactful.

Fashion video marketing

In addition to the criticism, there are instances where fashion video marketing has been seen as “genius” or, in any case, truly distinctive.

One example comes from John Galliano, who made a 50-minute YouTube film showing a “behind the scenes” view of the creative process that led to the conception of the collection.

“In fact, a succession of calls via Zoom and FaceTime, messages, emails, images made by a thermal camera with the support of AI and an X-ray app, creating poetic and powerful visuals. The result is bewitching: a reflection on the revenge of creativity in a time of total chaos, with an emphasis on clothing production.”

In another example, Loewe created a “show-in-a-box” by delivering a time capsule that contained a pattern and reproduction of the iconic elements of the collection so that the recipient could personally compose the new looks, transforming the desk into an atelier and bringing a “coffee table version” of the fashion show to each individual.

Two additional components – the digital and audio – completed the package. It included a soundtrack on vinyl combined with a paper record player and performances, conversations, and music were live-streamed by creative director Jonathan Anderson over a 24-hour period.

These two examples demonstrate that video can be an effective format for communication in the fashion industry as long as we know how to use it – in other words, as long as it’s used creatively.

For this reason, it is essential to imagine innovative uses that can effectively convey an immersive and exciting experience like a fashion show.

One of these is undoubtedly the use of personalized videos.

Personalized video for the fashion industry: talking to each person to reach everyone

If we think of traditional video, one downside is that, created for the masses, a video can be seen as impersonal since it works according to a broadcasting logic: one person speaks and transmits while many passively watch.

By nature, this “one-to-many” modality does not allow the viewer to actively participate in the content; at the most, viewers can be reached on an emotional level depending on the narrative or the theme.

The same marketing trends of 2021 indicate that companies must be able to put the individual with his needs and interests at the center of their strategy in order to make them feel like an active and relevant part of the relationship with the brand.

For this reason, the simple logic of showing one’s own collection in a video is not enough; users want more, they are looking for something different and personalized videos can be an innovative and effective solution for enhancing the business and providing a memorable experience.

What does it mean to create a personalized video?

To understand the benefits that personalized videos offer, it is first necessary to understand what we mean by personalized video.

To personalize a video, it is no longer enough for it to directly address the user or call them by name: in fact, this is ” level zero” of personalization. Expectations from users are higher and much more sophisticated than this.

A personalized video is, first of all, a video whose content changes in almost all its parts depending on who is watching it, which means that not everyone sees the same scenes. But you can go even further: maximum personalization is achieved when you give the user the ability to interact with the content, so that they actively choose what to see.

This is exactly what you can do by using Doxee Pvideo®, a product created to create and distribute personalized and interactive videos.

Doxee Pvideo® allows you to create videos composed of scenes that are selected according to the data of each recipient. To this, you can add text and custom banners, as well as ad-hoc chosen images and even a custom voice, thanks to the Doxee text-to-speech and audio library.

And that’s not all.

Thanks to the User-Directed-Storytelling (UDS) feature in Doxee PVideo® each user can independently choose the narrative path and navigation, moving horizontally and vertically within the video, actively building it right before their eyes. This process clearly involves the user, who is the protagonist of a real experience that is more than personalized, and, well, personal.

How to use a personalized video in the fashion industry

The kind of bi-directional storytelling that can be built with this type of video lends itself to so many different uses, as long as you’re creative. In this sense, the examples that were seen above can be inspiring.

One use can be to show your pieces as in a fashion show, but leaving the user to choose which garment they’d like to focus on. For example, a specific video could be created for each model, and the viewer could then decide to see it by clicking on it.

In the same way, just like in the Loew time capsule, one can imagine creating videos where the user directly interacts to “compose” the various models of the collection, thus participating directly in the creative process behind each fashion show.

All of this makes the simple viewing of a video much more immersive and able to emotionally involve the user, who has the feeling of a real event experience, even if through a digital medium.

However, the fashion industry doesn’t live only on fashion shows–there are opportunities to use personalized videos in many other ways.

Personalization boosts conversion

Perhaps one of the most important ways is related to apparel purchases, especially at a time like this when physical stores are suffering greatly and often find themselves with a large amount of unsold merchandise.

Although sales through digital platforms also remain a small percentage compared to the whole business, it is now clear that in order to survive, the sector will have to start exploiting all the main digital solutions, if only for future growth prospects. In fact, for some time now, the sale of clothing products online has been on the rise: already in 2019, the sector was scoring a +16%, totaling about €3.3 billion (ilsole24ore.com).

And this is just the beginning, considering that growth projections give the online fashion sector over 20% for the next few years, to the point that brands are starting to think about creating capsule collections designed specifically for the online market (www.agi.it).

In this sense, personalized videos can play a central role and be a formidable marketing tool.

They can be used to create a launch event for a collection, playing the role of a personalized invitation card and a digital event to follow, within which the user can use interactive elements to discover more about the garments of the collection itself.

In addition, personalized videos can be used as a conversion tool, giving the customer the chance to “walk” inside the “digital store” that contains all the available clothes and perhaps purchase them directly through a specific function of the video.

You can also imagine inserting interactive elements that the user can click on while viewing in order to be redirected to the relevant landing pages.

In this way, the conversion phase is inserted perfectly within the storytelling without being perceived as annoying or intrusive.

A video to keep in touch

Finally, another very interesting use of personalized videos is within newsletters.

Brands, no matter the sector, need to continue to reach users with relevant content even after the purchase in order to build a stable and lasting relationship with them. In this sense, inserting a personalized video in your newsletter to communicate the release of a new collection, an exclusive event, or specific offers is often a winning move.

First of all, because it is consistent with the consumption trends of digital content, where videos are the preferred format for users.

Secondly, because they make the email itself more interesting in the eyes of the customer, which is crucial considering that the average user is bombarded by hundreds of messages on a daily basis; therefore, it’s critical to create content that makes your brand stand out from the rest (rocketium.com).

Finally, using personalized videos in your newsletters allows you to strengthen the consistency of your storytelling, which can take full advantage of the potential of each touchpoint.

Integrating a sophisticated medium with an otherwise common communication channel to reach users reinforces the aspirational positioning that should be inherent in every fashion strategy and, moreover, demonstrates an attention to detail that will positively influence every customer.

 ## 3 Marketing Trends That Can Give Your Brand the Boost It Needs This Summer

 ![img](https://img-cdn.inc.com/image/upload/w_1024,h_576,c_fill/images/panoramic/GettyImages-1284636486_471335_enz27v.jpg)]

I know many people in the marketing world who don't pay much attention to the latest trends. They believe trendy marketing tactics today will fizzle out tomorrow. While this is true in some cases, I believe there are some trends worth paying attention to. It can be challenging to figure out the difference between the two, but lasting trends are those that can be measured and have a visible impact on your efforts.

By knowing what the trends are, you can increase your brand exposure, gain new customers, and build lasting customer relationships. This is something I have learned first-hand during my many years in the marketing realm. That said, here are some of the hottest marketing trends that you don't want to ignore this summer-- especially if you want to give your small business a boost.

1. Purpose-Driven Marketing

The Covid-19 pandemic made many brands realize that purpose-driven marketing was a great way to reach people with their message. At a time when things were uncertain, most people wanted to know that they were purchasing from brands that were making a difference in the world.

With purpose-driven marketing, your brand will connect with your audience through a common cause that most of your customers believe in. All the decisions and actions of the brand are simplified to one question: Does this represent our purpose?

Some brands will promote environmental awareness or focus on things like gender inequalities, racial issues, or human rights. Consumers are more likely to buy something from a brand when the brand makes its strong and clear purpose known because they see that their purchase is going to have a positive impact on the world around them. Also, these people are almost five times more likely to recommend your brand to others.

2. Sending Check-Ins to Your Customers

During the pandemic, your brand may have struggled to find the right words when trying to communicate with prospects and customers. Some brands decided to stay silent, others ignored the pandemic going on around them and kept communicating like nothing was happening. Other companies leaned into important issues that impacted their target audience and addressed them in commercials.

As things continue to return to "normal," it is up to you to find ways to reconnect with your prospects and customers. Some ways to do this includes questionnaires, surveys, and one-to-one feedback, which can provide you with unique and personable responses so that you better understand how the pandemic affected your customers. By reconnecting, you show you care and prove that you want to provide your customers the experience they want, need, and expect.

3. Play Into FOMO

4. Boost Sales with Product Demonstration Videos

Demo videos are popular, and for good reason. They serve a variety of purposes, including:

Reducing skepticism.

Consumers were already skeptical before the pandemic, but the tidal wave of misinformation among informational sources put trust at an all-time low, according to the Edelman 2021 Trust Barometer.

Demo videos help to alleviate that lack of trust because you aren’t making an empty pitch and expecting customers to simply take your word — you’re showing them exactly what your product can do.

Explaining key features.

The beauty of demo videos is that they give you the ability to present your products in a matter-of-fact, conversational way instead of a pushy sales pitch.

Much like the psychology behind relying on content marketing instead of cold calls, this low-pressure approach is more appealing to consumers. It also gives you the opportunity to explain why your product is unique in the market and how it can solve your customers’ problems.

Saving time and money compared to live demos.

Even before the era of social distancing and limited capacity, your brand’s reach with an in-person sales rep was much more limited than its digital reach, especially in foreign markets. (Not to mention the expenses that add up when you factor in salary, travel, commission, accommodations, and other expenses that accumulate when sales reps travel.)

Now, all you have to do is send out a link, and anyone can see the product demonstration.

5. Embed Videos Directly into Your Website

Search engines love videos, which is good news for SEO ranking. Videos encourage your visitors to spend more time on your website while also offering better engagement than plain text or images.

Adding videos to your landing pages can improve conversions by 86%, making them powerful additions to the rest of your content.

There are tons of opportunities to utilize video on your website:

Product pages can show the products in use or modeled on a person.

The homepage can feature your latest collection launch.

Your “About Us” page could have a fun behind-the-scenes look at the company and the people who keep it running. That gives consumers a much better picture of who you are than a column of text could.

In the end, videos are all about engagement. It just makes sense to engage your audience directly on your website.

6. Incorporate Videos into Your Email Campaigns

Email and video were meant to be together. And don’t just take our word for it — adding videos to your email campaigns has been shown to increase clickthrough rates by as much as 300%.

Depending on your email marketing tools, there’s an extra opportunity to capitalize on video effectiveness by setting up viewing data to generate a workflow based on whether a customer watched the video, and if so, which video they saw.

For example, if a lead watches 80% of a demonstration video for your latest product update, that would be a prime opportunity to filter them into a particular sales funnel with similar follow-up content and an omnichannel approach with relevant ads.

How to Accomplish Your Video Goals with Movavi Editing Software

We’ve seen a lot of ways that video can work to your brand’s advantage by spreading awareness, increasing leads, and boosting web traffic, clickthrough rates, and SEO rankings.

But it’s important to remember that the quality of your videos is going to play a big role in defining your success.

Before you start creating your first video, consider the basics:

Video Context

Where is this video going to be featured?

Is it a targeted ad on social media, or an “About Us” video that’s going to be featured on your contact page?

Context matters. Be sure you’re setting the appropriate tone and delivering the right information.

Visitor Intent

What stage of the sales funnel is your target audience in?

Are the viewers being introduced to your brand for the first time, or are they already familiar with you and looking for more in-depth information about your products and services?

Motivation

What do the viewers want?

What problem are they trying to solve, and what is your solution?

For example, an instructional video showing how to use your product is going to have a different look and feel than a promotional video advertising a flash sale.

All of these considerations should be carefully thought out as part of your initial strategy.

Once you have your plan, you need to have the right tools to bring your vision to life.

Cue Movavi.

 ## Content creation platform ContentFly raises $11.2 million CAD Series A round

 ![img](https://cdn.betakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Content-Writing.jpg)]

Toronto-based ContentFly, which offers an on-demand content creation platform, has closed an $11.2 million CAD ($9 million USD) Series A round of funding.

The raise was led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from Y Combinator (YC), Global Founders Capital, and a number of additional investors, including Alex Norman, who is a partner at N49P Ventures and co-founder and managing director of TechToronto.

“We firmly believe the future of content is in enabling great writers with great AI.”

ContentFly CEO Naeem Talukdar told BetaKit several of the investors in this round joined through simple agreements for future equity (SAFEs), including YC, and said this round represents the first round of funding for the startup.

Founded in 2018, ContentFly’s platform is aimed to help businesses create content. Users can create blog posts, social posts, and email copy. Using the platform, businesses upload a brief about the content they want to be written, as well as the desired word length. The platform takes a few days of researching to match the business with a writer. A writer will then craft the copy and revisions can be made free of charge. The company claims it has already helped more than 2,000 businesses scale content creation and connect with over 1,000 writers.

ContentFly is one of 13 Canadian startups that participated in YC’s 2021 Winter Batch.

The new funding will be used by the startup to double down on its AI capabilities, grow its team of content writers, and expand its platform.

“A lot of products recently are trying to replace writers with AI,” Talukdar told BetaKit in an emailed statement. “We firmly believe the future of content is in enabling great writers with great AI. Our funding will allow us to grow our marketplace of talented content writers, build a suite of cutting edge AI tools to equip them with, and expand our platform to be an all-in-one suite for any company that wants to do great content marketing.”

In a recent blog post on the Series A round, Talukdar wrote the startup plans to allow brands to combine ContentFly’s marketplace with AI, to lower content creation costs, improve efficiencies, and create better content. The blog highlighted GTP-3, a language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text, as one of the types of AI it planned to use.

Another priority for ContentFly is to provide end-to-end, integrated content marketing to users. The company said it plans to offer an “all-in-one platform for content marketing,” which would allow businesses to build, manage and scale their content marketing programs.

 ## Pregame Y Combinator with Equity – TechCrunch

Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines.

This is our Wednesday show, where we niche down and focus on a single topic, or theme. This is our sweet spot: going beyond definitions and into the dirty and deep impact of how a phenomenon could impact startups and tech. We are hoping to explore more than answer, and debate more than agree.

This week we’re riffing on the impending Y Combinator Demo Day class, all hailing from the Winter 2021 cohort. As we stated on the show, we’re not saying that these are the only startups worth looking at. They’re simply the startups from the batch that TechCrunch has already covered, as well as some crowdsourced favorites.

Here’s a brief rundown of the show, bucketed by market choice, loosely:

Startups serving startups: The largest group of startups in our rundown, we chatted about BrioHR, which is building HR software for Southeast Asia (TechCrunch coverage here); Firstbase, which helps entrepreneurs build US-based business regardless of their location; ContentFly, which wants to use a hybrid of computer and human intelligence to provide writing services; Runway, which wants to help companies better manage app rollouts (TechCrunch coverage here); and Mono, which is building a Plaid for Africa (TechCrunch coverage here).

Marketplaces: Here we found two companies to discuss, the first being Providence’s own Pangea, and Queenly. Pangea (TechCrunch coverage here) is building a freelance marketplace for digitally savvy college kids and small businesses, while Queenly is a marketplace for formalwear (TechCrunch coverage here).

Space: Alex demanded that we include Albedo, which is aiming to launch a satellite constellation to improve imaging of the planet using low-orbit flight paths.

Biotech: And then there were two biotech companies. The first, Pipe|Bio does big data management for drug development, and Nuntius Therapeutics, which is working on delivering “large genetic payloads into the correct cells.” Which sounds cool.

The actual Demo Day is happening next Tuesday, so TechCrunch and Extra Crunch will be all over day-of coverage as per usual. Talk then!

Equity drops every Monday at 7:00 a.m. PST, Wednesday, and Friday morning at 7:00 a.m. PST, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts.

 ## NFLPA-Backed OneTeam Partners Invests in Video Production Network Toldright

 ![img](https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/hMySNh33Xp1DMu9hxJRjPw--~B/aD03MjA7dz0xMjgwO2FwcGlkPXl0YWNoeW9u/https://media.zenfs.com/en/sportico_165/e0662d16b3d13020d571e19919665706)]

Toldright, the video production network founded earlier this year by a group of former sports media executives, has raised a multi-million-dollar Series A round led by Vertus Ventures and OneTeam Partners.

The round also includes a few family offices and some friends and family, according to CEO and co-founder Max Heineman. He said the money will be used to help the Toldright network continue to spread across the country, and to help identify new areas of growth.

More from Sportico.com

“This really never was about raising a ton of money,” Heineman said in an interview. “We see profitability on the horizon in six months, whereas a lot of tech companies have been in business five years and they’re still not profitable, and they’re on Series C or Series D.”

Heineman said both Vertus and OneTeam’s investments were seven figures. He declined to be more specific about the details.

Toldright, which Heineman has called the “Uber Black of content creation,” is a network that matches freelance video professionals—camera operators, producers, lighting designers, audio techs, etc.—with companies that need assistance with projects large and small. Toldright hit the market as media grows more decentralized and as large legacy employers lay off or furlough staff–a trend accelerated by the pandemic.

Since officially launching in February, the network has expanded to 1,700 professionals around the country. In addition to working with sports entities and media companies, Toldright has also found a niche in corporate training and safety videos. As an example, Heineman mentioned augmented reality video, viewed through an Oculus headset, that can train new quick-service restaurant employees how to navigate their kitchens.

At launch, about 70% of the company’s work was in live events, but that’s starting to shift toward the bulk of the work being video for corporate clients. Toldright has worked with groups such as Xerox, Bose, Citibank, and the Kansas City Royals.

Story continues

OneTeam was founded in 2019, by the NFLPA, MLBPA and RedBird Capital to help athletes monetize their fame beyond their specific leagues and teams. In addition to its venture investing, the firm does group licensing and athlete marketing, two areas where Toldright’s business could be additionally relevant.

Vertus Ventures is a Jacksonville-based investment group backed by the people who founded (and later sold) Web.com.

 ## Xiaomi picks LINGO for social media and video production for POCO brand

 ![img](https://micdn-13a1c.kxcdn.com/images/sg/content-images/poco.jpg)]

Xiaomi has appointed LINGO Marketing Agency (service brand under One Media Group) with a one-year social media and video marketing contract for its independent brand – POCO. The agency will provide services for their social media pages to enhance the brand awareness and customers engagement globally. POCO is now available in more than 35 global markets, and for fast-growing business such as POCO, it requires a service firm that is able to integrate cultural differences for brand adaptation.

As such, LINGO will provide strategic social media approach with a localised tone of voice along with strong visual to communicate with its international customers. POCO was launched as a Xiaomi brand back in 2018, its first smartphone – the POCO F1 had driven the popularity among the market, which offered top of the line specifications at an affordable price.

Alvin Tse, head of POCO global once stated that with POCO the brand did not need to follow any of Xiaomi’s or Redmi’s legacy. The name POCO was chosen because it is “easy to pronounce, easy to spell, easy to remember, for all countries, for across the world,” an important factor for an upcoming brand, especially considering that many mispronounce Xiaomi (pronounced as Shao-mi). It was then separated into an independent brand by the Chinese electronics giant in 2020, before it launching the second smartphone. In March 2021, POCO, as an independent brand, hosted an online global launch event for the highlighted series - POCO F3 and POCO X3 Pro.

Recently, Xiaomi Hong Kong also handed Flare Communications Group a one year communications contract. The agency will provide strategic counsel, PR, social and influencer integrated services to amplify brand awareness, optimise visible presence among local and regional communities to build relatable and engaging content.

Building on Xiaomi’s reputation in technology and smart gadgets, Flare will continue to reinforce Xiaomi’s leadership role in the industry, as well as to enrich its lifestyle image in all round aspects. Flare’s service will be effective on 15 July 2021 onwards. Xiaomi is an internet company with smartphones and smart hardware connected by an Internet of Things (IoT) platform at its core. With an equal emphasis on innovation and quality, Xiaomi pursues high-quality user experience and operational efficiency.

A video production academy has been established to help Moray businesses promote themselves and their products.

The team at IT Central.

The new academy in Elgin offers a 12-week course which will teach everything that's required to make a memorable video, as well give advice on strategy to marketing.

IT Central has developed a purpose-built production space with the help of a £25,000 grant from Highlands and Islands Enterprise

Lee Midlane, IT Central's founder, said: "The demand for video content has increased over lockdown with internet users often spending more than seven hours a week watching online videos.

"There is a real risk that smaller businesses could get left behind altogether in video marketing.

"I have had increased opportunities to complete training and courses during the lockdown period and it became apparent that gaps were increasing, both for small businesses in general and female-owned businesses in particular.

"Our course is available anywhere in the world.

"As long as you have a smartphone and the internet you will be able to learn how to create engaging videos from concept, through the production process."

The development of the video production space has meant a relocation from the firm’s long-term home on South Street to the well-known Audrey’s Tearooms at the top of Harrow Inn Close.

Scott McKnockiter, business development account manager with HIE in Moray, said: "IT Central is part of our region’s creative industries sector, a strong sector for the Highlands and Islands and one with considerable growth potential.

"The firm’s move to create a video production academy in a dedicated studio space will not only help IT Central expand, but will help other Moray firms improve their market reach through more engaging video content.

"I am very pleased we have been able to support this venture and look forward to seeing the video academy achieve its ambitions."

The Video Production Academy course begins this coming Monday.

Applications close on Sunday.

 ## How to change the text to speech voice on TikTok

 ![img](https://metro.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GettyImages-1169692106_1624282734.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=1200&h=630&crop=1)]

TikTok’s voice feature reads any written text aloud. (Picture: Getty)

From humble beginnings as Musical.ly – a lipsyncing app – to one of the most dominant social media apps, TikTok has become a significant force in culture.

It has made multi-millionaires out of some of its breakout stars and has helped turn songs into hits.

In a move that shows the app is also committed to championing accessibility and forward-thinking, TikTok has a Text-to-Speech feature, which uses an in-house AI which reads captions and written text aloud.

For those with dyslexia or impaired eyesight, this feature makes TikTok a more user-friendly app. The downside, though, is that some TikTok users aren’t crazy about the voice that’s used.

North American users have recently led the charge in sussing out ways to change the voice, although the replacement didn’t go down well with everyone.

But, what about UK TikTok users? Can we swap voices in this country too?

How to pick a new Text-to-Speech voice on TikTok

First, you have to have the feature turned on.

To turn on text-to-speech on TikTok:

Select the video where you want the voice feature to be used.

Once the video is saved, select the add text option from the bottom of the screen.

After writing your text, press and hold on to the text box

From the options, select text-to-speech

The voice feature will be automatically applied and you can post the video on TikTok

However, if you want to change the voice reading out your text, TikTok doesn’t have an inbuilt feature to do that (yet).

So, you can use voice generators online to change the sound.

To change the voice, you’ll have to use an app or software that edits videos – some of the most popular text-to-speech websites and voice generators include uberduck.ai, voicegenerator.io and tts.mp3.com.

Some of these sites let you choose recognisable voices, like popular culture characters and celebrities.

Using a site like Uberduck, here’s how to change the voice on a TikTok.

Head to the website.

Type the text you want to use into the ‘speech to synthesize’ box.

Choose your voice.

Download the generated MP3 file.

Upload the MP3 file to any video editing app you have and align it with the video you want to upload to TikTok.

Save your new video with the new voice track and upload the video to TikTok.

These steps may differ between voice modifying apps, but the process will be similar across most of them – you’ll need to download an audio file and add it to a video file using an editor.

 ## Stephen A. Smith reveals damning text about Ben Simmons during ‘First Take’

 ![img](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/06/Ben-Simmons-ESPN-Stephen-A.-Smith.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=1200)]

Another bizarre wrinkle has unfolded in the Ben Simmons saga.

On ESPN’s “First Take,” host Stephen A. Smith received a text during the show that focused on Ben Simmons’ work ethic since he has been with the 76ers. Smith told viewers his source was someone who is “very, very close to the situation in Philadelphia.” He then read the text aloud.

“He doesn’t work, he doesn’t listen, and everyone around him is family, and he’s constantly babied,” the source told Smith.

After an awful playoff series in which Simmons refused to shoot in the fourth quarter of Game 7, the former first overall pick has been greeted by harsh criticism. He was told by Shaq he would’ve “knocked [Simmons’] ass out” if they were teammates. His coach was even unsure if he could lead his team to a championship. Not to mention the memes all over social media.

Even after getting tongue-tied and not being able to answer if Simmons could lead the 76ers to the promised land, head coach Doc Rivers still wants to work with him this offseason. He even created a plan of action to fix Simmons’ self-esteem.

“I think some of the stuff is obvious,” Rivers said. “We’re not hiding that Ben has to become a better free-throw shooter, and a more confident free-throw shooter. If that happens, I really believe a lot of the other parts of his game will follow. I said that before the season started. The first thing I said was, ‘We got to get him to the line 10 times a night.’ So, we’ve got to put in work so he can get there. But if we can get him there, man, his game goes to a different level.”

Ben Simmons “doesn’t work” and “doesn’t listen,” a source told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. NBAE via Getty Images; Getty Images

Rivers’ plans might be foiled by Simmons’ attitude, if Smith’s source is to be believed. The 24-year-old point guard will have to get his game back on track and get back the confidence that made him a generational prospect. Otherwise, his time in Philadelphia may be cut short.

 ## Creating An AI Text-to-Speech Using IBM Watson

 ![img](https://analyticsindiamag.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/1-1.png)]

The recent decade has seen some of the most groundbreaking developments in the field of artificial intelligence. Especially in recent years, data collection and analysis has bolstered up considerably with the help of interconnected devices through the internet and super-fast computer processing. Whether they be in the domain of automobiles, with self-driving cars, in the healthcare industry with artificially intelligent robot systems that can aid a doctor with surgery, the manufacturing industry and much more. Artificial Intelligence, combined with the power of Machine Learning, has provided us with a wide spectrum of implementations and uses, even to be discovered in the years to come. One of the most fundamental advancements in such has been Virtual Voice Assistants and Voice & Text recognition services. With the pace of life getting faster and busier every day, our voice has become an essential tool to command and generate results instantly. Consumer-based Virtual Assistants such as Alexa by Amazon and Siri by Apple, or Google Assistant, have become a part of our daily lives to obtain information, schedule and plan tasks, or leisure. But have you ever pondered what goes on behind the scenes? We will try to explore one of the aspects, called Text-to-Speech.

What is Text-to-Speech?

Text-to-Speech is a form of Speech Synthesis where the algorithm converts language into human speech. The main goal of Text-to-speech is to generate natural-sounding speech signals for the voice assistant agents. It can also be a feature through which your computer or phone reads on-screen text aloud to you, often used as an accessibility feature to help people who have trouble reading on-screen text, and is also convenient for those who want it to be read for them. Text-to-speech has become so omnipresent that people encounter it every day without even realizing it. Text-to-Speech, often called TTS, often find their use in Smart Speakers, Ebook Readers, Mapping and Direction-based software, Word Processors, and much more. The voice for TTS is usually computer-generated; reading speeds can be sped up or slowed down accordingly. Many tools even highlight words as they are read aloud to allow the user to see text and hear it simultaneously. Text-to-speech can also be considered an optimal tool for converting immense masses of text into playable audio data for ease of work.

About IBM-Watson Cloud

The IBM Cloud is a platform that provides a range of services, a combination of both Platforms as a Service (Paas) and Infrastructure as a Service(IaaS), for providing the integrated experience. It is one of the most open and secure public clouds for businesses. A hybrid multi-cloud platform with advanced data and AI capabilities and deep enterprise expertise across 20 different industries. It’s a full-stack cloud platform, having over 170 products and services covering essential domains in Information Technology such as Data, Containers, AI, IoT, and Blockchain. The Cloud also provides solutions that enable higher levels of compliance, security, and management, with architecture patterns and methods for rapid delivery across mission-critical workloads. It is available worldwide, across 19 countries and regions in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, so that one is enabled to deploy services locally with global scalability.

The platform consists of multiple components that work together to provide a consistent and dependable cloud experience.

Getting started with AI Text to Speech using Watson Text-to-Speech

We will try to get a flavour of what it takes to build a Text-to-Speech recognition model and how it works. The following steps will be used to create one such model :

We will first capture our text using python

We will then set up our Text-to-Speech Model Using The IBM-Watson TTS.

Create an Output Mp3 file that contains the audio to our text

The following code implementation is in reference to the official implementation, whose video tutorial you can find here.

Creating The TTS Model

First, we will install the IBM-Watson dependency library to help us call our modules. It can be installed through pip using the following command.

#installing ibm-watson library to help call services

!pip install ibm-watson

Setup The Cloud Services and Authentication

We need to set up the service first using the IBM Watson on cloudTTS module.

To do so, we’ll first go to cloud.ibm.com/catalog.

Click on services and from Category,

Tick the AI/Machine Learning checkbox to filter out the service modules.

Then click on Text to Speech, and select the free plan that offers up to 10k characters to convert per month.

After doing so, we’ll write a few lines of code in python to authenticate our model.

#setup our text-to-speech module from ibm_watson import TextToSpeechV1 from ibm_cloud_sdk_core.authenticators import IAMAuthenticator #Authenticate our Model

After it is created, from Manage, copy the API key and Url and paste it to our code.

# Creds Text to Speech apikey = 'KEY HERE' url = 'URL HERE'

Now, we will complete our final authentication from the server using the following code.

#setup service authenticator = IAMAuthenticator(apikey) #Create our service tts = TextToSpeechV1(authenticator=authenticator) #set the IBM service url tts.set_service_url(url)

Demo Testing A Basic Language Model

We will first test our created model using a single line to read and create an audio file named speech for it. We will also be calling the synthesize function from IBM-Watson to make our created model speak the input text and set our output as an Mp3 audio format.

with open('./speech.mp3', 'wb') as audio_file: res = tts.synthesize('Hello World!', accept='audio/mp3', voice='en-US_AllisonV3Voice').get_result() audio_file.write(res.content) #write the content to the audio file

You will find the audio output in the path provided when the code is successfully executed.

Reading Text from our File

We will now use our tested model to create a text-to-audio file from the text file we have. Here I have used Winston Churchill’s speech as the text input.

#testing our model using an audio file with open('/content/Churchill.txt', 'r') as f: text = f.readlines() #view the contents Text

It will give us the following output.

['We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans,

', 'we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our

', 'Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing

', 'grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we

', 'shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a

', 'large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and

', 'guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the

', 'New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.']

Replacing the space indicators present in the text with actual spaces.

text = [line.replace('

','') for line in text] #replacing the line indicator with spaces text #view the converted file

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

Next up, we will concatenate the text and feed it to our module.

text = ''.join(str(line) for line in text) #concatenate and feed it to the module.

Generating the Output

Generating our output audio file created from the text, You can choose the voice according to the language you want, and the gender of voice needed. Furthermore, you can view all the details regarding the voices and languages available from here.

with open('./winston.mp3', 'wb') as audio_file: res = tts.synthesize(text, accept='audio/mp3', voice='en-GB_JamesV3Voice').get_result() #selecting the audio format and voice audio_file.write(res.content) #writing the contents from text file to a audio file

You will find your newly created audio file named “winston.mp3” inside the path provided!

Using a Different Language Model

You can also use the following method to create a model to read a different language as well,

I have created another audio file using Spanish text and calling Spanish language agent from IBM-Watson Cloud.

#synthesize and write output into a MP3 audio with open('./casa.mp3', 'wb') as audio_file: res = tts.synthesize(casa, accept='audio/mp3', voice='es-US_SofiaV3Voice').get_result() audio_file.write(res.content)

 ## Wu Dao 2.0: China’s Answer To GPT-3. Only Better

 ![img](https://analyticsindiamag.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Wu-Dao.jpg)]

The Chinese govt-backed Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence’s (BAAI) has introduced Wu Dao 2.0, the largest language model till date, with 1.75 trillion parameters. It has surpassed OpenAI’s GPT-3 and Google’s Switch Transformer in size. HuggingFace DistilBERT and Google GShard are other popular language models. Wu Dao means ‘enlightenment’ in English.

“Wu Dao 2.0 aims to enable ‘machines’ to think like ‘humans’ and achieve cognitive abilities beyond the Turing test,” said Tang Jie, the lead researcher behind Wu Dao 2.0. The Turing test is a method to check whether or not a computer can think like humans.

Smartphone maker Xiaomi, short-video giant Kuaishou, on-demand service provider Meituan, 100 plus scientists and multiple organisations have collaborated with BAAI on this project.

Wu Dao 2.0

The Wu Dao 2.0 is a pre-trained AI model that uses 1.75 trillion parameters to simulate conversational speech, writes poems, understand pictures and even generate recipes. The next generation Wu Dao model can also predict the 3D structures of proteins, similar to DeepMind’s AlphaFold and power virtual idols. Recently, China’s first virtual student, Hua Zhibing, was built on Wu Dao 2.0.

The language model Wu Dao 2.0 was trained with FastMoE, a Fast Mixture-of-Expert (MoE) training system similar to Google’s Mixture of Experts. Unlike Google’s MoE, FastMoE is an open source system based on Pytorch (Facebook’s open-source framework) with common accelerators. It provides a hierarchical interface for flexible model design and easy adaption to various applications like Transformer-XL and Megatron-LM. The source code of FastMoE is available here.

“[FastMoE] is simple to use, high-performance, flexible, and supports large-scale parallel training,” wrote BAAI in its official WeChat blog.

Result-wise, Wu Dao 2.0 has surpassed SOTA levels on nine benchmark tasks, including:

Showcasing benchmark tasks where Wu Dao 2.0 surpasses other SOTA models (Source: BAAI)

Towards multimodal model

Currently, AI systems are moving towards GPT-like multimodal and multitasking models to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI). Experts believe there will be a rise in multimodal models in the coming months. Meanwhile, some are rooting for embodied AI, rejecting traditional bodiless models, such as neural networks altogether.

Unlike GPT-3 , Wu Dao 2.0 covers both Chinese and English with skills acquired by studying 4.9 terabytes of texts and images, including 1.2 terabytes of Chinese and English texts.

Google has also been working towards developing a multimodal model similar to Wu Dao. At Google I/O 2021, the search giant unveiled language models like LaMDA (trained on 2.6 billion parameters) and MUM (multitask unified model) trained across 75 different languages and 1000x times more powerful than BERT. At the time, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that LaMDA, trained on only text, will soon shift to a multimodal model to integrate text, image, audio and video.

The training data of Wu Dao 2.0 include:

1.2 terabytes of English text data in the Pile dataset

1.2 terabytes of Chinese text in Wu Dao Corpora

2.5 terabytes of Chinese graphic data

Blake Yan, an AI researcher from Beijing, told South China Morning Post that these advanced models, trained on massive datasets, are good at transfer learning, just like humans. “Large -scale ‘pre-trained models’ are one of today’s best shortcuts to AGI,” said Yan.

“No one knows which is the right step,” said OpenAI on its GPT-3 demo blog post, “Even if larger ‘pre-trained models’ are the logical trend today, we may be missing the forest for the trees, and we may end up reaching a less determined ceiling ahead. The only clear aspect is that if the world has to suffer from ‘environmental damage,’ ‘harmful biases,’ or ‘high economic costs,’ not even reaching AGI would be worth it.”

 ## Turing NLG, GPT-3 & Wu Dao 2.0: Meet The Who’s Who Of Language Models

 ![img](https://analyticsindiamag.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Language_AIM.jpg)]

Language modelling involves the use of statistical and probabilistic techniques to determine the probability of a given sequence of words in a sentence. To make word predictions, language models analyse preceding text data. Language modelling is usually used in applications such as machine translations and question-answer tasks. Many researchers and developers working on building robust and efficient language models posit that larger models, trained on a higher number of parameters, produce better outcomes. In this article, we compare three massive language models to find out if the theory holds.

Turing NLG

Microsoft introduced Turing NLG in early 2020. At that time, it held the distinction of being the largest model ever published, with 17 billion parameters. A Transformer-based generative language model, Turing NLG or T-NLG is part of the Turing project of Microsoft, announced in 2020.

T-NLG can generate words to complete open-ended textual tasks and unfinished sentences. Microsoft has claimed the model can generate direct answers to questions and summarise documents. The team behind T-NLG believes that the bigger the model, the better it performs with fewer training examples. It is also more efficient to train a large centralised multi-task model rather than a new model for every task individually.

T-NLG is trained on the same type of data as NVIDIA’s Megatron-LM and has a maximum learning rate of 1.5×10^-4. Microsoft has used DeepSpeed, trained on 256 NVIDIA GPUs for more efficient training of large models with fewer GPUs.

GPT-3

In July last year, OpenAI released GPT-3–an autoregressive language model trained on public datasets with 500 billion tokens and 175 billion parameters– at least ten times bigger than previous non-sparse language models. To put things into perspective, its predecessor GPT-2 was trained on just 1.5 billion parameters.

GPT-3 is applied without any gradient updates or fine-tuning. It achieves strong performance on many NLP datasets and can perform tasks such as translation, question-answer, reasoning, and 3-digit arithmetic operations.

OpenAI’s language model achieved promising results in the zero-shot and one-shot settings, and occasionally surpassed state-of-the-art models in the few-shot setting.

GPT-3 has a lot of diverse applications, including:

The Guardian published an entire article written using GPT-3 titled “A robot wrote this entire article. Are you scared yet, human?” The footnote said the model was given specific instructions on word count, language choice, and a short prompt.

A short film of approximately 4 minutes–Solicitors was written by GPT-3.

A bot powered by GPT-3 was found to be interacting with people in a Reddit thread.

The industry’s reaction towards GPT-3 has been mixed. The language model has courted controversy over inherent biases, tendency to go rogue when left to its own devices, and its overhyped capabilities.

Wu Dao 2.0

Wu Dao 2.0 is the latest offering from the China government-backed Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI). It is the latest and the largest language model till date with 1.75 trillion parameters. It has surpassed previous models such as GPT-3, Google’s Switch Transformer in size. Unlike GPT-3 , Wu Dao 2.0 covers both Chinese and English with skills acquired by studying 4.9 terabytes of texts and images, including 1.2 terabytes of Chinese and English texts.

It can perform tasks such as simulating conversational speech, writing poetry, understanding pictures, and even generating recipes. It can also predict the 3D structures of proteins like DeepMind’s AlphaFold. China’s first virtual student Hua Zhibing was built on Wu Dao 2.0.

Wu Dao 2.0 was trained with FastMoE, a Fast Mixture-of-Expert (training system). FastMoE is a PyTorch-based open source system akin to Google’s Mixture of Experts. It offers a hierarchical interface for flexible model design and easy adoption to applications such as Transformer-XL and Megatron-LM.

Are bigger models better?

The size of the language models are increasing. Bigger models are assumed to be better at generalising and taking us a step closer towards artificial general intelligence.

Former Google AI researcher Timnit Gebru detailed the associated risks of large language models in her controversial paper “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big?”. The paper argued although these models were extraordinarily good and could produce meaningful results, they carry risks such as huge carbon footprints.

Echoing similar sentiments, Facebook’s Yann LeCun said, “It’s entertaining, and perhaps mildly useful as a creative help. But trying to build intelligent machines by scaling up language models is like building high-altitude airplanes to go to the moon. You might beat altitude records, but going to the moon will require a completely different approach.”

All the three discussed language models have been introduced within a span of just one and a half years. The researcher communities around the world are gearing up to develop the next ‘biggest’ language model to achieve unparalleled efficiency at task execution and getting close to the AGI holy grail. However, the lingering question here is whether this is the right way to achieve AGI, especially when in the face of risks including bias, discrimination, and environmental costs.

 ## DeepMind AGI paper adds urgency to ethical AI

 ![img](https://venturebeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/dims-e1575998404106.jpg?w=1200&strip=all)]

All the sessions from Transform 2021 are available on-demand now. Watch now.

It has been a great year for artificial intelligence. Companies are spending more on large AI projects, and new investment in AI startups is on pace for a record year. All this investment and spending is yielding results that are moving us all closer to the long-sought holy grail — artificial general intelligence (AGI). According to McKinsey, many academics and researchers maintain that there is at least a chance that human-level artificial intelligence could be achieved in the next decade. And one researcher states: “AGI is not some far-off fantasy. It will be upon us sooner than most people think.”

A further boost comes from AI research lab DeepMind, which recently submitted a compelling paper to the peer-reviewed Artificial Intelligence journal titled “Reward is Enough.” They posit that reinforcement learning — a form of deep learning based on behavior rewards — will one day lead to replicating human cognitive capabilities and achieve AGI. This breakthrough would allow for instantaneous calculation and perfect memory, leading to an artificial intelligence that would outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task.

We are not ready for artificial general intelligence

Despite assurances from stalwarts that AGI will benefit all of humanity, there are already real problems with today’s single-purpose narrow AI algorithms that calls this assumption into question. According to a Harvard Business Review story, when AI examples from predictive policing to automated credit scoring algorithms go unchecked, they represent a serious threat to our society. A recently published survey by Pew Research of technology innovators, developers, business and policy leaders, researchers, and activists reveals skepticism that ethical AI principles will be widely implemented by 2030. This is due to a widespread belief that businesses will prioritize profits and governments continue to surveil and control their populations. If it is so difficult to enable transparency, eliminate bias, and ensure the ethical use of today’s narrow AI, then the potential for unintended consequences from AGI appear astronomical.

And that concern is just for the actual functioning of the AI. The political and economic impacts of AI could result in a range of possible outcomes, from a post-scarcity utopia to a feudal dystopia. It is possible too, that both extremes could co-exist. For instance, if wealth generated by AI is distributed throughout society, this could contribute to the utopian vision. However, we have seen that AI concentrates power, with a relatively small number of companies controlling the technology. The concentration of power sets the stage for the feudal dystopia.

Perhaps less time than thought

The DeepMind paper describes how AGI could be achieved. Getting there is still some ways away, from 20 years to forever, depending on the estimate, although recent advances suggest the timeline will be at the shorter end of this spectrum and possibly even sooner. I argued last year that GPT-3 from OpenAI has moved AI into a twilight zone, an area between narrow and general AI. GPT-3 is capable of many different tasks with no additional training, able to produce compelling narratives, generate computer code, autocomplete images, translate between languages, and perform math calculations, among other feats, including some its creators did not plan. This apparent multifunctional capability does not sound much like the definition of narrow AI. Indeed, it is much more general in function.

Even so, today’s deep-learning algorithms, including GPT-3, are not able to adapt to changing circumstances, a fundamental distinction that separates today’s AI from AGI. One step towards adaptability is multimodal AI that combines the language processing of GPT-3 with other capabilities such as visual processing. For example, based upon GPT-3, OpenAI introduced DALL-E, which generates images based on the concepts it has learned. Using a simple text prompt, DALL-E can produce “a painting of a capybara sitting in a field at sunrise.” Though it may have never “seen” a picture of this before, it can combine what it has learned of paintings, capybaras, fields, and sunrises to produce dozens of images. Thus, it is multimodal and is more capable and general, though still not AGI.

Researchers from the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI) in China recently introduced Wu Dao 2.0, a multimodal-AI system with 1.75 trillion parameters. This is just over a year after the introduction of GPT-3 and is an order of magnitude larger. Like GPT-3, multimodal Wu Dao — which means “enlightenment” — can perform natural language processing, text generation, image recognition, and image generation tasks. But it can do so faster, arguably better, and can even sing.

Conventional wisdom holds that achieving AGI is not necessarily a matter of increasing computing power and the number of parameters of a deep learning system. However, there is a view that complexity gives rise to intelligence. Last year, Geoffrey Hinton, the University of Toronto professor who is a pioneer of deep learning and a Turing Award winner, noted: “There are one trillion synapses in a cubic centimeter of the brain. If there is such a thing as general AI, [the system] would probably require one trillion synapses.” Synapses are the biological equivalent of deep learning model parameters.

Wu Dao 2.0 has apparently achieved this number. BAAI Chairman Dr. Zhang Hongjiang said upon the 2.0 release: “The way to artificial general intelligence is big models and [a] big computer.” Just weeks after the Wu Dao 2.0 release, Google Brain announced a deep-learning computer vision model containing two billion parameters. While it is not a given that the trend of recent gains in these areas will continue apace, there are models that suggest computers could have as much power as the human brain by 2025.

Source: Mother Jones

Expanding computing power and maturing models pave road to AGI

Reinforcement learning algorithms attempt to emulate humans by learning how to best reach a goal through seeking out rewards. With AI models such as Wu Dao 2.0 and computing power both growing exponentially, might reinforcement learning — machine learning through trial and error — be the technology that leads to AGI as DeepMind believes?

The technique is already widely used and gaining further adoption. For example, self-driving car companies like Wayve and Waymo are using reinforcement learning to develop the control systems for their cars. The military is actively using reinforcement learning to develop collaborative multi-agent systems such as teams of robots that could work side by side with future soldiers. McKinsey recently helped Emirates Team New Zealand prepare for the 2021 Americas Cup by building a reinforcement learning system that could test any type of boat design in digitally simulated, real-world sailing conditions. This allowed the team to achieve a performance advantage that helped it secure its fourth Cup victory.

Google recently used reinforcement learning on a dataset of 10,000 computer chip designs to develop its next generation TPU, a chip specifically designed to accelerate AI application performance. Work that had taken a team of human design engineers many months can now be done by AI in under six hours. Thus, Google is using AI to design chips that can be used to create even more sophisticated AI systems, further speeding-up the already exponential performance gains through a virtuous cycle of innovation.

While these examples are compelling, they are still narrow AI use cases. Where is the AGI? The DeepMind paper states: “Reward is enough to drive behavior that exhibits abilities studied in natural and artificial intelligence, including knowledge, learning, perception, social intelligence, language, generalization and imitation.” This means that AGI will naturally arise from reinforcement learning as the sophistication of the models matures and computing power expands.

Not everyone buys into the DeepMind view, and some are already dismissing the paper as a PR stunt meant to keep the lab in the news more than advance the science. Even so, if DeepMind is right, then it is all the more important to instill ethical and responsible AI practices and norms throughout industry and government. With the rapid rate of AI acceleration and advancement, we clearly cannot afford to take the risk that DeepMind is wrong.
